DC COMICS: SUPERMAN STYLE GUIDE
It's not often you get to give an American icon a makeover. But when DC Comics wanted to update the Superman brand they contacted us. Being experts in both modern pop culture and pop culture history, and what fans love, we knew exactly what to do.
Past versions of the DC Comics Superman style guides were simple 3-panel brochures based on various artistic styles like Pop Art. For the new style guide, DC Comics wanted to do something more adventurous to highlight the new direction the illustration used in the comics.
Our solution was to create an oversized style guide based on the "Daily Planet," the newspaper where Clark Kent, Superman's alter ego, is employed. The 16-page "newspaper" included patterns, icons, graphic styles, and product concepts.
Usually only approved artists are allowed to create variations on DC Comics properties, so we were honored to be asked to develop a unique, retro-style color scheme for Superman illustrations to complement the slick, more contemporary versions.
The art created was so successful that the distressed Superman logo we created has been one of the most popular licensed superman t-shirt design in the history of the brand.
